Ever got ripped off by a contractor or handyman?
An unfortunate aspect of life is the risks people take in hiring a company to perform remodeling services. The Better Business Bureau tracks inquiries and complaints and has stated that “people tend to do more research when they are spending a lot of money”. So.. it is NO surprise that contracting attracts the greatest number of inquiries, followed by automotive dealers and repair and service shops. So how does a homeowner minimize the risk of poor work or just out and out thievery? We will address this topic today. There are some basic guidelines, that when followed will reduce to frustration of going the wrong way and reduce the stress and potential legal complications of getting your home fixed up. First, start by contacting the BBB and getting a report on the company you are considering. It’s a free service, and you can do a pretty good job of pre-screening potential contractors. You can make the inquiry on line. The BBB will rate a company on a scale of A+ to F, based on complaints received and how they were handled. Obviously, the higher the grade the, the better the experience. Second, determine if the company has proper insurance. A reputable company will not only have Liability and Worker’s Compensation Insurance, but will provide you with proof of coverage. Legitimate contractors will gladly provide you with a certificate with your name as additionally insured. These are basic first steps.
